I studies Chemistry on chemistry unit. so i`m know as Alchemist. our teacher was wrong. Based on Oxford dictionary 'Alchemist-Person who study in Chemistry'. "Al" on that word maybe taken from Arabic word and maybe the one that begin this subject is Arabic person in Islamic era.

it is good that you had done your homework.but you have to look at the word from wider perspective. a word had its own history. most words which begin with 'al' are derived from arabic words.in the case of 'alchemist' and 'chemist'they denote different meanings.
1: chem‧ist [countable]
: a scientist who has special knowledge and training in chemistry
2: al‧che my [uncountable]
: a science studied in the Middle Ages, that involved trying to change ordinary metals into gold
