DISTINGUISHING FACTS FROM OPINIONS
Learning to understand the difference between facts and opinions is a valuable skill.
EXP: Think about this statement:
• There are too many in the English language.
Do you agree or disagree with the statement?
It is possible to agree or disagree with the statement because it is an opinion. You cannot prove whether there are too many word in the English language or not. Opinions are beliefs that cannot be proven.
• EXP: The human body has 206 bones.
You can’t agree or disagree with this statement because it is a fact. You can count the number of bones in the body to prove that there are exactly 206. Facts can be checked. They can be observed, counted, and measured. Unlike opinion, facts can be proven to be true.
Meaning
• Facts are statement that can be proven to be true.
• Opinions are statements that describe someone’s feeling or beliefs about a topic. They cannot be proven.
The ability to distinguish between facts and opinions will help you to make judgments about what you read.
